Description
Very rare 1895 CONSTITUTION AND PLAYING RULES OF THE SOUTHERN ASSOCIATION OF BASE BALL CLUBS. OFFICIAL.Published by A. G Spalding & Bros, New York, Chicago, Philadelphia
Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama, & Louisiana had teams win this league.
This is not the Southern League, but an early incarnation of the Southern Association of Base Ball Clubs, so it is a very rare publication.
This rule book came from the baseball memorabilia collection of Bill Valentine, of Little Rock, Arkansas, a professional umpire for the American League from 1963-68, and later the long-time manager of the Arkansas Travelers. The Travelers played a few games in the 1895 Southern Association Club.
"Vaughan" at the top matches signature of Hall of Fame player Arky Vaughan, who played for the Pittsburg Pirates and Brooklyn Dodgers as a major league player between 1932-1948. As his name implies, Arky Vaughan was born in Arkansas. I am not a signature expert, so please judge for yourself, but it looks just like it.
Book is a 32 leaf (64 page) stapled booklet with chips to front and back cover, water mark on side of front and back cover, covers almost detected. Very fragile front and back cover. You can see some damage to top right corners that effect about 1/2 the leaves.
Measures: 6 7/8" X 5 1/8"
