The Godfather, dean, big six and birth of recruiting industry
It may seem crazy to say now, but some 50 years ago recruiting coverage was very, very little. Of course in those days there was no internet, social media, etc. There also wasn’t anything close to the appetite there is today to follow college football recruiting.
But for whatever reason, when I was in middle school and high school, recruiting always fascinated me. What little coverage of Ohio State recruiting there was in those days mostly consisted of one or two paragraph articles in the Columbus Dispatch or Columbus Citizen Journal (Columbus had two newspapers in those days) about a high school player when that player committed to the Buckeyes. I used to really look forward to reading those short articles.
Oh how things have changed. And in large part they began to change in the early 1980’s with the work of a handful of people that began to cover recruiting in more detail, led by the true godfather of recruiting, Joe Terranova.
The big six who got it all started in those early days were Terranova, Max Emfinger, Tom Lemming, Allen Wallace, Bill Buchalter and Dick Lascola. One of the lines in the article is “Terranova, 45, is the father of the recruiting experts. Even Lemming says grudgingly, ‘To criticize him is like a rock musician criticizing the Rolling Stones.’” Terranova was an executive at Ford who started covering recruiting and gave most of his profits from his recruiting business to charity. I would later contact Terranova and found him to be a fantastic and very helpful person.
Lemming is an ex-postman in Chicago who is the only one of the big six still doing this. He travels around the country each year and meets with and takes pictures of top prospects, usually at an area high school. He continues to put out his magazine.
