Description
Offered in this listing is a ratherscarce
and
unique
item for
SMU
collectors about their football team from the last century.
In
1935 Southern Methodist University
played twelve regular season football games, and won all twelve. Furthermore, the
Mustangs shut out eight of their twelve opponents
, and only once gave up as many as 14 points (to
T.C.U.
). Representing the
Southwest Conference
,
SMU
was
invited to play
one-loss
Stanford
in the
1936 Rose Bowl Game
in Pasadena, California. This was SMU's second ever bowl game but their first marquee bowl game. This Rose Bowl Game was the
first Rose
Bowl sellout
, with all 84,784 seats filled, and many with a large portion of fans from Texas. It was estimated there was a request for an additional 200,000 tickets.
Re: the game itself, Stanford scored first in the first quarter, and the rest of the game turned out to be a defensive struggle. Stanford had six interceptions in the game, and SMU had a crucial fumble which they lost at Stanford's five yard line. The game ended with a final score of 7-0 in Stanford's favor.
This listing is for a large football-shaped collectible item (9.25 inches horizontally) that was printed in December, 1935, (over 85 years ago), for the chartered Texas & Pacific train carrying a large contingent of Texas-based S.M.U. fans traveling West to the 1936 Rose Bowl football game. This is a Dinner Menu. Honestly this is a great item for the collector of SMU memorabilia who appreciates vintage, difficult-to-find collectibles close to a century ago. It is much more than a mere dinner menu. The SMU football team is shown via a large cut-out on the front cover, and contains separate images of SMU's coaching staff, headed by Matty Bell, the SMU Band Director, the Band Sweetheart, the mascot Peruna, Peruna's care taker, SMU's Business Manager, and features a large photograph of the destination site of the ballgame, the Rose Bowl.
If one is an SMU fan, or even an SMU historian, I would think this original Chartered Train Rose Bowl Menu would be near the top of your "Want List". And can you imagine what a gift this would make to the SMU lover? I really feel fortunate to have had this for 50+ years, but I am selling off all my treasures I have collected over the years because of my advancing age.
Thank you for viewing my EBAY-auction item. (Please note: I do
not
ship internationally.) God bless.
